Safaricom boss Bob Collymore takes medical leave

Safaricom chief executive officer Bob Collymore will be out of office for an unspecified number of months to receive specialized medical treatment, the listed telecom announced on Monday.

In a statement to newsrooms, Safaricom chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a said the move followed recommendations from doctors but did not specify the nature of the medical condition.

“On behalf of the board, management and the entire Safaricom community, I wish Bob quick recovery and look forward to him resuming his duties as soon as doctors allow him to do so,” Mr Ng’ang’a said.

The 59-year-old Guyanan born CEO has been an integral part of Safaricom growth since taking over in 2010.

During his absence, Safaricom chief financial officer Sateesh Kamath, who also serves as his alternate at the board, will take a primary role in steering the company.

He will be supported by director of strategy Joseph Ogutu who will handle the day to day operations of Safaricom.

Mr Ogutu also serves as the chairman of the Safaricom Foundation.
