Safaricom feted as Africa’s best mobile operator

Listed telecom operator Safaricom has been named the African Mobile Operator of the Year in the annual CommsMEA Awards.

The firm was feted for its continued innovation and development of mobile services that has seen it grow its reach.

Safaricom trounced the likes of Algeria’s Ooredoo, South Africa’s Vodacom, Sudatel and Vodafone Egypt to clinch the award.

Safaricom has over the last seven years been diversified its offering from the traditional voice and SMS services.

During the release of the half year results, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Bob Collymore said the plan was to make the firm a platform that provides services for diverse sectors of the economy.

Mr Collymore said this would transform Safaricom from being just a telecommunications company.

Safaricom was nominated for the award which is distributed by CommsMEA, a leading Middle Eastern publication that focuses on the telecoms sector.

Over the last six months Safaricom has progressed its vision to transform lives by redefining its emphasis on putting the customer first, providing relevant products, and enhancing operational efficiencies.
