Security department gets addition Ksh 228B budgetary allocation
In a bid to secure the country from internal and external aggression, the government has allocated a total of Ksh 264 billion to the security docket for the 2016/17 financial year, up from an allocation of Ksh 35.7 billion last year.
The Treasury, informed by the rising terror threats in the country, allocated Ksh 124 billion to Defence and NIS and another Ksh 140 billion to the State Department, Interior Ministry.
While delivering the budget statement in Parliament, treasury CS Henry Rotich said the funds will be used in modernization of the security agencies.
He further announced that the government is working with partners to construct 20,000 housing units to provide decent housing for security agencies within 24 months.
Further, surveillance cameras have been installed and police vehicles bought to enhance mobility.
Rotich said the government is working to improve police welfare as well as the police to population ratio.
The budget presentation comes at a time when the government is facing increased loss of funds through corruption.
