19-year-old university student dies after abortion

A 19-year-old Kampala International University (KIU) student, identified as Irene Kyakunda, died after procuring backstreet abortion, says New Vision.

A post-mortem revealed that she succumbed to complications from the abortion – contrary to reports that Kyakunda died as a result of having been gang raped and murdered.

The body of the first-year public administration student was discovered on Tuesday, November 1^st in the swamps adjacent to Nakimese Zone in Wakiso District.

Her body was tied with ropes, her dress was torn to shreds and there was blood on her legs – indicators of rape and murder.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the post-mortem report, disclosing Kyakunda died hours after the failed procedure.

“She suffered massive internal bleeding into her abdominal cavity,” he said.

Mr. Onyango added investigations are underway to establish which ‘doctor and clinic’ that facilitated the procedure.

According to colleagues, Kyakunda stayed at the University up to about 10:00pm on Tuesday before heading to her rented residence, a kilometer away from the university campus.

“When we called her for the morning jogging routine, her phone was switched off,” said Kyakunda’s friend, Mutesi.

The burial is scheduled for Thursday at her parents’ home in Kiruhura District, Western Uganda.
