Barack Obama ‘couldn’t arrange’ daughters to meet Lionel Messi
While giving a speech at the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative Town Hall meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina earlier in the week President Barack Obama spoke of his desire to bring daughters Sasha and Malia with him on the journey so that they could “see the beauty and vibrancy” of the city.
He also disclosed some very important football-related information: both Sasha and Malia have a dream much like many of our own, and it involves Barcelona’s Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi.
“They’ve already met one famous Argentinean – His Holiness Pope Francis. Now they want to meet Messi, but I could not arrange that,” Obama told the group of young entrepreneurs.
The leader of the free world also gave a pretty sweet nod to 4x NBA champion Manu Ginobili; “I can confirm that he is not only a nice guy but also one of the best players in the world – and a proud Argentinean. So he is a great champion. My Chicago Bulls have been losing and the Spurs have been winning, so I’m not happy about that.”
Lionel Messi would love to meet the First Family of the United States and admitted as much in an interview with Argentina’s TyC Sports on Thursday.
“Obviously, I was surprised that he (Obama) said that, but on the contrary, for me it would be completely the opposite,” Messi told TyC Sports, according to ESPN.
“For me it would be a source of great pride to be able to meet him and his daughters, but obviously I know it would be complicated.
“I don’t know whether it is possible. Maybe he made the comment because he was in Argentina but I can say I was as surprised as everyone else,” said Messi.
Messi was in Chile with Argentina’s national team for a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier when the Obamas were in his country.
