Celebrated Kikuyu musician Salim Junior buried
Celebrated Kikuyu musician Salim Junior, born Paul Mwangi, has been laid to rest.
The feted Mugithi singer, who passed on January 22nd while undergoing treatment at Nakuru Memorial Hospital, was buried in Subukia, Nakuru.
Hundreds of mourners thronged the hospital’s mortuary to pay their final respects to the Kigooco Pure hit-maker before proceeding for a requiem mass held at Subukia Market Park.
Top Kikuyu musicians, media personalities, church leaders and politicians attended the final sendoff for the ‘King of Mugithi’.
Salim Junior, who took after his equally famous guitar-playing dad, was eulogised as trendsetter and mentor for younger musicians.
Steve Muraya, a Nakuru based musician, said that Salim was a down-to-earth person who invested time in up and coming singers.
His parents, Jose and Eunice Salim, praised their son saying he was a pillar in their home. The fallen singer was remembered as a caring family man who was full of sagely advice for his siblings and friends.
The late Salim Junior is survived by his wife, Judy Muthoni and his three daughters: Tasha, Winsket and Tracey.
A fallen musical icon
Salim Junior is a scion of the famous guitar-playing Salim family from Subukia, Nakuru. Like his singing siblings, he was inspired by their dad who sang gospel music.
Though many people mistakenly assumed that he and his family were Muslims because of the name ‘Salim’, his dad only chose the moniker because he wanted to have a unique stage name.
The musically gifted family is credited for popularsing the ‘one man guitar’ style, which later came to be referred to as Mugithi.
The late Salim Junior’s siblings are also renowned Mugithi artistes. They include: Mighty Salim, Sarafina Salim and their last born, 25-year-old Salim Young.
The deceased singer was known for his lovely renditions of songs like Sarafina, Muti Uyu Mukwona remix among others.
