Crazy World: Couple sells baby on social media for Ksh253, 000 to buy iPhone

A Chinese man was jailed for selling his 18-day-old baby online so he could buy a new iPhone.

The man, from Tong’un, Fujian Province, used social media to sell his daughter for Ksh253, 000 (23,000 Yuan) so he could buy the Apple product and a motorbike, a court in China heard.

The man, identified by the fictitious name ‘A Duan’, found a buyer through social media network QQ after spending time in internet chat rooms, the People’s Daily Online said.

The couple, who unintentionally conceived when they were both 19, decided to sell the child after they began to struggle financially.

The child’s mother, given the pseudonym ‘Xiao Mei’, worked several part-time jobs but eventually agreed to let her partner sell their baby to buy the goods.

She reportedly told authorities: “I myself was adopted, and many people in my hometown send their kids to other people to raise them. I really didn’t know that it was illegal.”

The buyer, who is yet to be identified, is said to have bought the baby for his sister. She still has the baby while officials decide on the best course of action.

A Duan was given a three year jail sentence while Xiao Mei was given a two-and-a-half year suspended sentence, according to the Epoch Times.
