I had to strip to make fellow students believe me Njugush

Many describe him as the funny, slender, tall and dark comedian who is effortlessly humorous and always has a way of turning even the worst of situations into something worth smiling about.

Timothy Ndegwa, going by the pseudonym Njugush, is a man who people rarely take seriously, including his own mum.

The Real Househelps of Kawangware actor recently told Daily Nation’s Buzz that it is only the government that doesn’t consider him a nutcase.

“No one does (take me seriously), except the government, when it comes to taxes,” he said.

One would expect the last person to lose trust in that which you say is the mother.

However, that is not the case with funnyman Njugush as his own mum too doubts whatever he says – thanks to his jokey nature.

“My mom never believes anything I say, she always has to confirm whether I am playing with her or I am serious.”

His mum is not alone in doubting him, Njugush says his friends too never believe whatever he says or does – regardless the nature of urgency needed.

Recounting an incident which confirms the above statement, he narrated: “I remember when I was in college, we were just getting to the hostels from the club and we were attacked, but I managed to escape. I couldn’t fight for obvious reasons and I couldn’t see because it was dark.”

“I ran to the hostel for help since there were girls in our company. No one wanted to come out because they thought I was joking; I had to strip down for people to take me seriously.” Njugush said.

It is this inherent joking nature that would later land him a job as a comedian, despite studying Mass Communication in college.

“In mid-2013, I was looking for a job in every media house. Back then I wanted to become a very serious journalist and had gone to the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.”

“After seeing me in a play I had done two years before, Abel Mutua called me. He told me they were starting a show called Hapa Kule and they needed me for a bit of silliness and humour.”

It is that ‘silliness’ which landed him a role in The Real Househelps of Kawangware that propelled him to fame.

However, the bony comic says there’s one thing he cannot do at all!

What could it be? Njugush said: “Skating. I am afraid of breaking my bones.”
