Jose Chameleone: I boycotted Ugandans long time ago

Ugandan musical maestro Jose Chameleone is apparently unbothered by his countrymen’s threats to boycott his shows and music because of his political affiliation.

Ugandans on social media have been firing salvos at the Valu Valu hit-maker for supporting President Yoweri Museveni during the general election.

After Museveni was announced Uganda’s president, Chameleone took to social media to urge fans that backed opposition leader Kizza Besigye to not ‘punish’ him by boycotting his shows.

“To all friends and fans who have thrown unkindness to me for practicing my fundamental right of choice, please stop threatening to boycott my showcases that show how conditional your support to me is. I have never insulted your love for other artistes simply because such is life (sic),” he said.

However, it now seems that the Wale Wale star has developed a thick skin as he recently said in an authoritative manner that he already “boycotted Ugandans two years ago”.

Kampala Sun reports that Chameleone swore he is not moved an inch by “Ugandans’ loose talk”.

“Boycotting my music? I boycotted Ugandans 2 years ago. Have you seen me organise a concert in the past one year? I won’t organise one this year, and the next two years,” Chameleone is quoted as saying.

“I am targeting the international audiences; Africa and worldwide audiences,” Chameleone added.

The singer enjoys colossal support in his native Uganda, other East African states and the rest of Africa.

Museveni extended his 30-year rule on February 27, winning an election that international observers said lacked transparency and his main opponent, Kizza Besigye, said the exercise was a sham.

One of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, Museveni won 60.8 percent of the vote, while opposition candidate Kizza Besigye secured 35.4 percent, according to the electoral commission.
