Landed in Nairobi: UK-based Kenyan drill star Dreekz flying the Kenyan flag high with pulsating music

As Kenyan music continues to sweep the globe with the nation's flag being proudly flown around the world, a new wave of second-generation Kenyan international artists have emerged with impeccable talent and unmatched musical ingenuity.

These brilliantly gifted young superstars are fusing the vibrant rhythms and Swahili harmonies of their East African homeland with global beats to produce music that shows true international love for their Kenyan homeland.

One of these young stars is London and Nairobi-based Afrobeats artist Dreekz, who went viral last year with his TikTok "Kenyan Freestyle" video and hit single "Down for Me".

Both jams, which blew up online and received massive airplay from Kenya's mainstream media including Citizen TV, also made their way to the UK's BBC Radio.

Dreekz mixes his rich UK vibes and groovy beats with Swahili lyricism and melodies to create vibrant and crucial sounds that leave audiences asking for more.

Having just recently been working in the studio with one of Kenya's finest Drill artists, the Buruklyn Boyz, Dreekz has just dropped his new release, "Afro-Drill Tune" produced by UK second-generation African beats maker Scratcha.

The single, which was recorded during his 2023/4 winter sabbatical in Kenya, was also accompanied by a music video which was directed by Nairobi's acclaimed director Steve Blackson, back in December 2023.

The video also beautifully captures the vibrant colours of the spectacular Ngong Hills contrasted with the Nairobi cityscape, creating an optical illusion which then morphs into a vivid blend of photography and nature.

Over a driving Drill beat, the song narrates Dreekz's excitement at coming back to his Nairobi hometown with lyrics and imagery that captures his pride in his Kenyan vibe and heritage.

"I was so proud to spend last winter in my hometown, hang with my Kenyan family and friends and bring together talented people from both Kenya and the UK." says Dreekz. "I needed to delay the release of this song as I really wanted Scratcha to put the finishing touches on this mix."

"But I think this Afro-Drill song now really reflects the inspiration I got from my time in Nairobi."

Dreekz is moving back to Nairobi in June 2024 with a busy schedule of recording, live appearances and collaborations lined up and is psyched to show the best of the Kenyan homeland to the UK and worldwide audiences.
