Mashemeji Derby rebranded to Mollis Derby
Have you seen that Mashemeji Derby has been renamed Mollis Derby?
Football rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be meeting at Nyayo Stadium this Sunday and they have opted to call the match the #MollisDerby, instead of ‘The Mashemeji Derby’.
The contentious reference comes just as the debate about the Mollis audio tape has simmered down.
For those who might not be familiar with the Mollis craze: it was brewed after an audio recording of a sexual encounter made its way online.
In the clip, the lady continuously mispronounced the name Morris as ‘Mollis’ as she complained of exhaustion from the seemingly rigorous session. She told the man to stop saying that she has ‘sullendered’.
This audio clip which was shared extensively across social media platforms left many debating whether the lady was being raped, or it was a misinterpreted case of mutual consent.
Some online users praised ‘Mollis’, with others going to the extent of calling him a ‘real man’.
However, those who detested the clip termed the audio as ‘rapey’ and derogatory towards women. Others, like media personality Caroline Mutoko, went to the extent of shaming those who praised the man, telling them, “…go to your mother and talk that filth.”
On this backdrop, many are asking why Kenya Premier League gave the moniker #MollisDerby to the much anticipated match.
The hash tag which is yet to trend on social media is quickly gaining users, and some have already started tweeting under it.
One Bonface Osano wrote: “And now this #MollisDerby, wololo! So after #MashemejiDerby, one must salenda(surrender)?”
Dan Oketch questioned: “What am I hearing – #MollisDerby this weekend?”
The match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards is slated for Sunday at 3:00 pm at Nyayo National Stadium.
What do you think: is the #MollisDerby moniker acceptable?
