Meet Africa’s most beautiful First Ladies

They appear alongside Africa’s most powerful men, but often little is known about them. Save for being the wives of African Presidents, First Ladies play an important role in championing for social causes

Citizen Digital takes a look at eight of Africa’s most beautiful First Ladies and the projects that they run.

Margaret Kenyatta (Kenya)

Margaret Wanjiru Kenyatta is a darling to most Kenyans. Though she is over 50 years of age, Maggie – as she is fondly known by most Kenyans, always looks stunning with her salt and pepper short hair.

The First Lady is graceful, simple and yet extremely fashionable.

Margaret has  made headlines for her Beyond Zero campaign where she has run marathons with an aim of reducing child mortality in Kenya.

She has also taken part in the Hands off Our Elephants campaign to educate Kenyans and the world on the need to conserve the elephant for posterity, among others.

In 2014, she was named United Nations Person of the Year.

Ana Paula dos Santos (Angola)

Ana Paula used to be a model and an air hostess before her marriage to Angolan president José Eduardo dos Santos.

Paula dos Santos met her current husband during a presidential flight shift.

The mother of three holds degrees in law and education.

The Angolan First Lady actively supports landmine victims, and she has founded the Lwini Fund for Social Solidarity which is dedicated to the support of civilians-particularly women and children.

Chantal Biya (Cameroon)

Chantal Biya, the wife of Cameroon President, is famous for her eccentric hairstyles and bright outfits.

Most of her clothes are custom-made, and her unique style has even been named after her. Her favorite designers are Channel and Dior.

Chantal is very social and is engaged in various charity programs like African Synergy and Chantal Biya Foundation.

Queen Inkhosikati LaMbikiza (Swaziland)

Queen Inkhosikati LaMbikiza is the first wife of King Mswati III.

She is the only wife King Mswati chose by himself; the other 14 marriages were arranged.

At the age of 16, LaMbikiza dropped out of school to marry Mswati. Later, she went back to school and attained a degree in law.

However, she doesn’t practicing law because she’s afraid of being favoured because of her status.

The Swaziland First Lady is involved in the Swazi Royal Initiative to combat AIDS.

Dominique Folloroux-Ouattara (Ivory Coast)

Dominique Folloroux-Ouattara, originally from Algeria, is regarded as one of the most beautiful first ladies in the world.

Before becoming the First Lady of Ivory Coast, she was the CEO of French Beauty Services.

At 61, Dominique is still oozes elegance. The mother of two also is a founder of ‘Children of Africa’ foundation.

Aisha Buhari (Nigeria)

Aisha Buhari, the wife of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari, is a mother of five children.

Being a renowned cosmetologist and beauty therapist, Aisha knows how to look beautiful and stylish.

Before Muhammadu ascended to presidency, Aisha was a successful businesswoman; she was the Founder/Managing Director of Hanzy Spa and Principal of Hanzy Beauty Institute.

Many Nigerians refer to her as the classiest First Lady ever.

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba (Gabon)

Sylvia Bongo Ondimba became the First Lady of Gabon in 2009 when her husband clinched the presidency.

Sylvia has a wonderful fashion sense and she is a big fan of famous designer Valentino.

In 2011, she founded the Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Foundation entitled: “For the family” to help disadvantaged people around the world.

Princess Lalla Salma (Morocco)

Princess Lalla Salma is the wife of the King of Morocco, Mohammed the VI.

She is the first wife of a Moroccan leader to have been publicly acknowledged and given a royal title.

Lalla Salma is an exquisite blend of beauty and brains. She holds a degree in engineering.
