Renowned Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina suffers stroke

Renowned Kenyan author, Kenneth Binyavanga Wainaina, suffered a stroke at his home near Bomas of Kenya in October 31st and needs to travel to India for treatment.

“Binyavanga was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Karen Hospital. His speech was affected, and he needed to undergo MRI and CT scans, in addition to round the-clock observation. The doctors recommended medicinal treatment and specialized speech therapy. Binyavanga was discharged on November, Friday 6th,” says a press statement by Kwani Trust dated November 20th.

On Friday November 13th, the skilled writer developed some physical difficulties arising from the stroke.

Following a scheduled appointment with a neurosurgeon, Dr. David Oluoch Olunya, it was decided that he be admitted to Nairobi Hospital for further observation.

Binyavanga Wainaina was immediately checked into Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 24 hours and upon stabilisation, he was moved into the general ward.

Nairobi Hospital doctors advised that the 44-year-old has a chronic condition that affects the blood vessels to the brain making him susceptible to blockages and strokes.

They also stated that an immediate intervention is required before extensive therapy beyond first-stage treatment.

“Binyavanga’s family and friends are now working to avail the best medical care possible for him. Through consultation, it has been agreed that the best medical care is in Bangalore, India where further tests will be conducted with the possibility of surgery,” adds the statement by Kwani Trust.

Treatment will be followed by rehabilitation, recuperation and basic care.

Kwani Trust has consequently set up a fundraiser to raise resources for the How to Write About Africa author’s urgent medical treatment in India.

Kwani targets to raise Ksh 1 million via M-Changa.

It is estimated that USD25,000 (Ksh 2.6 million) is needed immediately, while a further USD20, 000 (Ksh 2 million) will be needed in mid-December.

Kwani Trust will hold a benefit concert on Saturday, December 7th at 8PM.
