Rihanna: I thought I could change Chris Brown after he beat me

When pictures of Rihanna’s bruised face went viral after she was ruthlessly beaten by Chris Brown, fans across the world thought that this was an end of their love story.

Brown had banged her head into the car window, punched her and even bitten her. The incident was so violent that people in a Los Angeles residential estate had to call the police to intervene.

There was international outrage, and many in the music industry shunned the talented Loyal singer calling him out on the violence.

Surprisingly, she took him back in late 2012. Why would such a talented musician walk back into such an abusive relationship?

“I was that girl,” she told Vanity Fair. “That girl who felt that as much pain as this relationship is, maybe some people are built stronger than others. Maybe I’m the person who’s almost the guardian angel to this person, to be there when they’re not strong enough, when they’re not understanding the world, when they just need someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing.”

Interestingly, she felt protective of him. In the interview that appeared in the November edition of Vanity Fair, she divulged that, at that time, she felt that the word hadn’t understood Chris.

With time, she came to realise that she was fighting a losing battle.

“You want the best for them, but if you remind them of their failures, or if you remind them of bad moments in their life, or even if you say I’m willing to put up with something, they think less of you—because they know you don’t deserve what they’re going to give,” said Rihanna.

Despite the domestic violence being public knowledge, Rihanna still finds it difficult to discuss the incident. According to her, reading and seeing pictures from the beating cause her to relive the horror.

So does she hate the Ayo singer for what he put her through?

Apparently not: “I don’t hate him. I will care about him until the day I die. We’re not friends, but it’s not like we’re enemies. We don’t have much of a relationship now.”

Though the two have tried to put the past behind them, the history of domestic violence has come back to haunt Chris Brown.

Some Australian authorities were lobbying for the cancelation of Brown’s tour of the island nation for what he did to Rihanna. The move has received support from numerous organisations fighting against gender based violence.
