AY has won numerous awards and has been nominated for many other accolades.
In 2007, he won Best Video from Tanzania at the Kisima Music Awards and in 2012 he won the Channel O Music Video Awards.
He has also been nominated at the Kora Awards as the Best East African Male Artist, at MTV Africa Music Awards for Best Hip Hop and at the Channel O Music Video Awards as the Best African East (Naongea Na Wewewith Mwanafalsafa)
A.Y’s Hip-Hop style embraces issues that affect the ordinary man on the street in Africa, and his lyrics are conveyed in a witty and entertaining manner. It is, therefore, unsurprising that A.Y. has walked off with numerous awards.
AY alias Ambwene Allen Yessayah, began his career with the group S.O.G. in 1996.
He is among the first Bongo Flava artists to commercialize hip-hop.
He was a member of the musical group known as East Coast Army, but now he’s no longer part of the group.
He decided to go solo in 2002 and he record his first album called “Raha Kamili”; the first single off this album – Rahu Tu was such a resounding success that it topped the charts on both radio and television.
Due to the success of this first album, A.Y.’s musical career took off, making him a household name.
His second single is called Machoni Kama Watu – in Swahili this means “their faces are human but their hearts are inhuman” – and was also very successful.
In 2005 A.Y. went on to release his second album Hisia Zangu – my feelings, and the first single, Yule, soon topped the charts.
Hisia Zangu included collaborations with some of the big East African names such as Prezzo, Tattuu as well as Deux Vultures from Kenya and Marice Kirya from Uganda.
He is still releasing songs and albums collaborating most with an ex-coast artist Mwana FA.
His latest hit songs include: Zigo, Party song, Money, Touch Me Touch Me Feat. Sean Kingston & Ms Triniti and No Stress with Avril.
