Mugo Karuga, 72, who hails from Kirinyaga, was the driver of President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s security detail back in the 70’s.
In an interview with Kenya’s Mwakilishi.com, Mugo nostalgically recalled one incident when barefoot school children visited Gatundu to entertain Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
“As the children started entertaining the president, I saw Uhuru rush to the dais and whisper something to his father. The young boy (Uhuru) immediately removed his shoes and joined the choir,’’ he recalled.
Uhuru said he removed his shoes because he wanted to be like the other children.
After the children had entertained the president, Mzee summoned Karuga and gave him instructions to take the children to the nearest Bata shop, which was then in Thika Town, and buy each a pair of new shoes.
“Had Uhuru not requested his father to remove his shoes and join the children in the choir, perhaps Mzee would not have seen the need to buy shoes for the children who had entertained him,’’ he said.
Supporting Kenyan brands
In December, Kenya hosted the World Trade Organisation’s 10th Ministerial Conference. In line with African culture where drums were used to announce important matters, President Uhuru Kenyatta officially opened the conference by beating a drum.

The model had a brief session with Uhuru who assured her of his support and even signed it on paper.
Uhuru in unofficial Regalia
Unlike his predecessors who were known for their stiff dressing, Uhuru has been spotted severally in casual attire.
Uhuru also appeared on the BBC’s trends of the week, with the title ‘The president who wears skinny jeans’.
He was spotted in skinny jeans as he was leaving India on the eve of October 29th after a state visit.
He also made waves when he wore an army uniform at State House when he presided over a military function at Archer’s Post in Samburu as the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces.
The Presidential Strategic Communications Unit posted his photos on social media wearing the military jungle-green uniform.
