This is what Oprah Winfrey said about Wangari Maathai

American media proprietor and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey, has paid tribute to 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and founder of Green Belt Movement, Wangari Muta Maathai.

Oprah took to her official Facebook page on Thursday to appreciate the late environmentalist’s work in ensuring girl child education was prioritized in Kenya and beyond.

The media mogul wrote: “In remembrance of Wangari Maathai, #mylittlething is educating girls to become leaders in their families, in their communities and our world.”

The status update garnered approval from fans and followers of the talk show producer across the world.

Oprah’s recognition of Maathai comes exactly one week to the environmentalist’s memorial which will take place in September 25.

Wangari Maathai is and would be remembered for her iconic role in fighting for rights of women, democracy and environmental conservation.

In 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace”.

Maathai was an elected Member of Parliament and served as Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources from January 2003 to November 2005

In September 25, 2011, Maathai succumbed to complications from ovarian cancer.
