Why I did not pay tribute to mum in my latest song King Kaka

Kenyan rapper King Kaka says he did not pay tribute to his mother in his latest song ‘Papa’ because he has honored her in a different song dubbed Mama.

In the song Papa, King Kaka tackles the sour relations he had with his late father; but he only mentions his mum in a line that says: “I won’t lie to you; I wasn’t in good terms with my father back in 1993 when I was a kid. I witnessed dad disagree with mum.”

Touching on why he revealed so little about his mum in the song, King Kaka told Citizen Digital: “I have paid tribute to mum in a different song titled Mama. The audio is available on my YouTube channel. In the song I narrate how mum has been instrumental in my upbringing; how selfless she was in ensuring I don’t lack basic necessities. Basically, I appreciate the effort she put in raising me up; and at the same time urge her to keep on going in life.”

From Kaka Sungura to King Kaka

King Kaka, who was until January 2016 known by the stage name Rabbit Kaka Sungura, said he rebranded because he is “more mature now in the music scene”.

“I have been in the music industry for a while and having grown immensely, it was time I rebranded. And so far it has worked for me – people have shown me a lot of respect. I am happier my fans have warmly embraced my new stage identity,” Kaka said.

“A few years ago I got into the music industry for fame and money; but I have learnt over the years that good music and great message goes a long way. Going forward, I will record only life soundtracks.”

Relationship with baby mamas

King Kaka, who also paid tribute to the mother of his two daughters, said he exclusively opened up about his relations with the two women because he wanted to “appreciate” them in a special way.

“Information about my two baby mamas is available all over the internet. But I chose to speak about them in the song – one: to appreciate them and two: to encourage all young men out there who are in the same situation as I to make wiser decisions as they grow older,” he said.

“My daughters are growing older. With time, they might want to know why I did not end up settling down with their mums – I used the song Papa to relay that information to them. And I wouldn’t want them to grow up and commit mistakes similar to their dad’s.”

So how did his baby mamas take the song, Papa?

“The girls’ mothers like the song, and I am in good terms with them,” he revealed.

The song Papa has been well received across the board; and that has surprised King Kaka.

“Very many people have been touched by the tribute and that explains why within a stint of five days since the day it was uploaded on YouTube, it has garnered over 70, 000 views,” King Kaka said.

King Kaka partnered with silky-voiced trio, Elani, to produce the hit song.
