Suicide: 10 warning signs to look out for

Tuesday, September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day.

According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE), there are several warning signs of someone contemplating suicide.

They may start talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves and even look for a way to do it.

Feelings of hopelessness or having no purpose may also emerge as they verbalize seeing themselves as a burden to their friends, family or work colleagues.

Extreme mood swings may be displayed including anxiety and you may notice that they tend to isolate themselves from others.

When they do interact, they may be mostly agitated leading to anger and even talks of seeking revenge.

Sleep patterns also change drastically with sometimes too little or too much of it.

Increased consumption of alcohol and use of drugs may also indicate that the person is contemplating suicide.

Conversations with them will also often reveal feelings of ‘being trapped’ or in unbearable pain.

According to a report by World Health Organisation (WHO), suicide kills one person every 40 seconds with hanging, poisoning and shooting as the most common reported cases.

Out of this number, most of those affected were men as compared to women.

Ways to deal with suicidal thoughts include engaging in different activities to keep busy and seeking physical as well as mental care.
