Did you know there is Nairobi Pry in California, USA?
President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya made me dig deep in researching about Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
Away from the ‘#Kiderograss’ and ‘#ObamaReturns’, to something historical; Did you know that back in the United States in the ‘60s, a small city in California State launched a campaign to change its name to Nairobi?
The BBC reports 50 years ago East Palo Alto was home to a lot of African American families – they actually made up eighty percent of the city’s residents.
It was a time of surge in interest in African-American history and culture.
In East Palo Alto, a group of community leaders set in motion a strategy to change the name of the city to Nairobi.
However, they did not succeed. But along the way they managed to stem Nairobi High School, Nairobi Primary School, a Nairobi Co-operative Sacco and a Nairobi Shopping Mall.
