Fashion Alert: What not to wear to a wedding

Fashion Alert: What not to wear to a wedding

Of late, it seems like everyone and their mother is getting hitched around me, literally (a friend’s mother is getting married in November).

Just this month, I have attended three weddings and I am yet to attend another towards the end of the month.

During this time, I have noted that the most important part of being a guest at a wedding is your dress code (am not ruling out the wedding gift, though).

The question of what to wear to a wedding can at times determine whether you will attend a wedding or not.

Many turn down wedding invitations for lack of a proper outfit, many more, however, show up looking completely off or down right ridiculous.

My close friend and colleague got married last Sunday, and in her wisdom made a loud fashion alert on what she wants people ‘not to wear’ to her wedding.

In what I found truly refreshing, the bride took control of her day and advised her guests what she preferred they wear. It is her day; the least you could do is give her that.

She had noted when passing her invites around that people were keen on what her theme colours were, she politely declined to disclose the colours lest everyone show up dressed like the furniture.

To make matters worse, the colour theme was also the colour of the brides’ maids dresses, which meant it would be virtually impossible to tell apart the maids from the guests if everyone came dressed the same.

Another notable example is that of fashion stylist Annabel Onyango’s wedding where she requested all guests to wear black. It provided a sharp contrast from the white the bride and groom wore.

Far away in the United States, Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s sister, had all her guests dressed in white, same colour as the bridal party. Hers was a truly white wedding.

Good people, let us not dress like the furniture at a wedding and the bridal party. Stand out! Wear any other colour that flatters you.
