Homeboyz Radio fires breakfast show presenters Shaffie Weru, Neville, DJ Joe Mfalme

Homeboyz Radio, through its parent company Radio Africa, has fired its breakfast show presenters Shaffie Weru, Neville, and DJ Joe Mfalme with immediate effect.

The trio was let go following comments they made on the station on Thursday morning about Eunice Wangari, 20, who was reportedly thrown from the 12th floor of a building by a man after refusing his sexual advances.

The remarks elicited anger from Kenyans online with many of them calling for action to be taken against the three.

“The comments of said erstwhile employees, were neither authorized, approved nor cleared with the company nor was the subject discussed and/or authorized by the company’s senior leadership. We are deeply disappointed in their conduct,” read a statement signed by Homeboyz Radio General Manager Somoina Kimojino.

“We have determined that their conduct constitutes gross misconduct and an egregious breach of the company’s editorial policies. The company and its subsidiaries do not condone gender-based violence or any form of physical, verbal and emotional abuse nor does it subscribe to the view shared by the three employees.”

The station further sought to assure its partners and listeners of its commitment to ensuring that presenters are regularly trained on media and gender issues, the ethics of reporting on issues of gender-based violence and sexual assault, inclusivity and diversity.

“We thank you all for demanding more of the media industry at large. While we continue to provide great news, information and entertainment we will endeavor to do it with good taste and decency. We shall endeavor to do our part to change any and all harmful narratives surrounding gender issues,” added the statement.

The trio had earlier been suspended from the station pending investigations, during which period the East African Breweries Limited (EABL) pulled all sponsorship connected to them at the station.

Both the station and the presenters later issued apologies over the comments.
