I get my sense of humour from my dad – Bernard Ndong

Today is father’s day, and the Citizen Digital team sat down with a few of the men from our team to find our what they appreciate about their fathers and what they think about fatherhood.

Bernard Ndong is a sports anchor and reporter with Citizen TV.

Citizen Digital: People say that as children grow up, we pick a lot up from our parents, what can you say you’ve picked up from your dad?

What my dad inculcated in me was humour. He was a very funny guy who always looked at the lighter side of life.

Citizen Digital: Looking back at your childhood, what memory do you have that best depicts the kind of man your father was?

I come from a background that is a bit political. In the early 90’s when you were listening to the radio, you would always hear the former President Daniel Moi being lauded.

You would always hear Mtukufu Rais… Mtukufi Rais (His Excellency the President this…His Excellency the President that).

My dad, trying to be funny, once said that we should call him Mtukutu Rais. That day I laughed until I cried.

Citizen Digital: Was your dad the disciplinarian when you were growing up?

No, my dad was not the disciplinarian. He was always a joker. That was the greatest lesson he taught me – to appreciate humour.

He taught me to look at the lighter side of things, and it helps.

Citizen Digital:  What does fatherhood mean to you?

For me, the acronym DAD represents all it means to be a father. To me its stands for dedicated and devoted. That is what a dad should be.

Citizen Digital:  If you could tell your dad one thing today, what would it be?

Be serious!
