Justice Joyce Aluoch makes history as first African with top Fletcher award

Justice Joyce Aluoch has made history yet again after she was became the first African to be feted with one of Fletcher School’s top awards in the U.S.

On Friday, Lady Justice Aluoch was recognised as a distinguished graduate who promoted the institution standards through top roles in Kenya and internationally.

“My heart is full, my spirit is light…I may stand before you as someone with rich legal experience and who has lived a full life but in many aspects my story is like your own,” she told graduates at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

“I was challenged to accomplish things that had never crossed my mind. When you reach for higher, your possibilities will become unlimited,” the former Court of Appeal judge added.

According to the university website, the Class of 1947 Memorial Award is given annually to a mid-to-late career professional alumnus who embodies the mission of the institution and has upheld those ideals throughout their career.

Other notable recipients of the award include Reeta Roy, President and CEO of Mastercard Foundation as well as Roberta Jacobson, former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

In 2009, Lady Justice Joyce Aluoch made history as the first Kenyan judge to be appointed to serve at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Six years later, she accomplished yet another fete after she became the First Vice-President of the ICC.
