STDs are sexist, and women are the losers. Here’s why

There have been increased cases of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and the majority of victims, doctors say, are women.

During intercourse, it is much easier for STDs to be transmitted from a man to a woman than the other way round.

”Women bear the largest burden of these diseases,” CNN quoted Dr Edward Hook.

Dr. Cook is head of the Center for Social Medicine and Sexually Transmitted Diseases at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.

According to him, the lining of the vagina is more delicate than the skin on the penis.

This makes it easier for bacteria to penetrate and grow in women’s vaginas causing them infections.

Secondly, the signs and symptoms are difficult to notice, they could also be easily mistaken for a minor infection that one can simply self-medicate

This means that by the time one finds out that they have suffered from a serious STD, extensive and possibly irreparable damage has been done to the body.

It is also difficult for doctors to diagnose the disease.

Dr Hunter Handsfield from the University of Washington Center for AIDS and STD adds: ”If a guy goes into a doctor’s office with a urethral discharge, there are only a very small handful of things that can cause it, and most of those are STDs.”

For women its different.

Abnormal urinal discharge could be from many other causes including Urinary Tract Infections(UTIs), doing tests to determine what the problem could take days which means that it’s much harder for them.

As they stare at this challenge, women are still cautioned to note that not all STDs are from sexual intercourse.

Some are passed on through kissing, contact with blood of an infected person or from pregnant mother to child during delivery.

It’s however always important to understand your body especially the genitals to know when something might be wrong.
