Twins born three minutes apart but in different years

A pair of fraternal twins in San Diego helped close out 2015 and usher in 2016, as they were born three minutes apart on December 31 and January 1.

Jaelyn Salgado was born on Dec. 31 at 11:59, and her brother Luis was a real New Year’s baby born two minutes past midnight at Kaiser Permanente Zion Medical Center in San Diego.

Kaiser nurse Lynette Coetzee said the twins’ different year births was a rare occurrence.

“It’s very unusual. It’s very unusual and it’s very special. And I haven’t seen it in all my 34 years of nursing. So we are thrilled to have them here at Kaiser,” she said.

The twins’ father Luis Salgado said their mother was hoping her children’s birthdays would not straddle the new year.

“She really wanted to have the babies on the same birthday because later on in the years they’re going to have a little confrontation – my birthday came first – so it means two birthday parties… back to back,” Salgado said.

Their split birthdays notwithstanding, NBC reported both babies and their mother are healthy and happy.
