Why Tanzanian actress Wema Sepetu will not be an MP

Wema Sepetu’s dreams of becoming a lawmaker in Tanzania have been dented after she failed to secure a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) nomination ticket.

Sepetu wanted to represent Singida in parliament, but she came in fourth after she garnered only 90 votes from CCM delegates.

Wema’s competitor, Aysharose Mattembe, won the nominations round after getting 311 votes.

Conceding defeat, Sepetu said that her experience has taught her numerous lessons that she will use come next electioneering season.

“When I decided to vie for nomination ticket to represent Singida, I knew very well I could win or lose. I was not lucky this time round, though I know there’s always a next time,” said Wema.

Wema, who won the 2006 Miss Tanzania crown, congratulated Aysharose, and thanked her supporters.

“I congratulate the winners, and thank all those who supported me throughout my campaign. The love you have shown has given me a lot of courage to continue fighting on,” said Wema.

She concluded by saying her journey to leadership has just begun.

Wema is a celebrated actress in Tanzania, and she has featured in more than 10 productions.
