Why your scalp is so itchy

An itchy scalp can be a very frustrating problem and is a cause of concern for most men and women.

While there are several causes of an itch scalp, Dr. Jennifer Shu, a Pediatrician, however told CNN that dandruff is one of the main causes.

Dandruff is mainly caused by overgrowth of yeast in the scalp. The yeast triggers inflammation and itching on the scalp which can sometimes causes flaking.

When the scalp is red and flaky from dandruff, it is called it seborrheic dermatitis.

Another common cause of itchy scalp is allergic contact dermatitis. This is common as people often develop allergies to hair colour, shampoo, conditioner and the different hair products they decide use.

Lice is another cause of an itchy scalp. Lice are easy to confuse with dandruff.

Lice are parasites that live on the scalp and eat human blood and can coincidentally cause intense itching.

The difference is that lice are a temporary infestation while dandruff is a chronic skin condition and distinguishing one from the other can help a person choose the right method to rid of the itching.

An intensely itchy scalp can sometimes spreads to the back of your neck or back depending on the length of your hair.

Using anti-dandruff shampoos two or three times a week, using anti-itching treatments such as Scalpicin usually relieves the problem.

Itchiness can be caused by heat or as a result from a dry and cracked scalp.

Inflammation of the hair follicles or bacterial infection of the scalp and hair loss conditions can also cause itching.

According to Healthline, there are multiple home remedies which may be effective for an itchy scalp that does not require medical treatment.

Among the recommended home remedies include; apple cider vinegar, organic coconut oil, zinc pyrithione shampoo,  peppermint oil and salicylic acid.
