Woman electrocuted by ATM

A 23-year-old woman was electrocuted by an automatic teller machine (ATM) at Xi’an in Shaanxi, China last Saturday, reports Shanghaiist.

Xiao Liu was withdrawing money from an ATM machine at China Everbright Bank (CEB) where as she was entering her PIN number, she felt a surge of electricity pass through her hand to her body.

The electric shock, which sent her to the floor, broke two of her fingernails and left her fingers bloodied while her entire arm was numbed by the high voltage charge.

Ms Liu was admitted to a local clinic where they bandaged up her wounds.

She later filed a complaint with CEB customer service and reported her card missing after it was retained by the machine.

CEB staff have since apologised to Liu and sent her to another hospital for further examination.

China’s reporters visited the bank and measured the electric potential of the ATM, which they found to be 200 V, 164V above the 36V limit bearable by human bodies.

The ATM machine has since been closed.
