Witnesses say that the gunman entered the main parliament building through an entrance meant for officials and exchanged gunfire with security officers.

An eyewitness, Peter Henderson said that the shots sounded like they came from a high-powered rifle.

‘‘I heard four shots, turned around and ran and I saw one of those soldiers lying on the ground.’’ Henderson added.

He further said that the soldier fell backwards as strangers and emergency personnel rushed in to try and save him as the gunman ran away.

Other witnesses described the gunman as a man with dark hair and a scarf on his head carrying a huge rifle.

They added that the man came around the corner of Prime Minister's office and put the gun on his shoulder and fired four shots into the back of the slain soldier.

Kevin Lamoureux, a Member of Parliament said that he heard a loud and rapid fire of 20 shots or more that appeared to be very close.
