10 arrested while partying at a Muranga bar during curfew

Ten people were on Thursday evening arrested by police officers deployed to enforce compliance with COVID-19 guidelines in Murang’a town.

According to Murang’a East Deputy Commissioner Virginia Githundi, the 10 were whiling away the hours inside the Top Life bar within the town.

A video seen by the Citizen Digital news desk showed several people being ushered into two police land cruisers.

The operation had begun at 9 pm when bars are supposed to have closed for the day in compliance with new directives.

Several other revellers escaped arrest by barricading themselves inside several other bars.

Ms Githundi told the media that the notorious bar within Murang’a town has been a nightmare, flouting rules and giving local leaders a hard time.

“The 10 who were arrested will be arraigned in court on Friday so that they can serve as an example to others, this bar Top Life has really been a nuisance in this town,” she said.

While underscoring the need for Kenyans to adhere to the guidelines, Ms Githundi said the rules are not meant to favour the government but the people.
