10 hospitalized as cholera hits Migori

More than ten people have been admitted to different health facilities in Nyatike, Migori County following a fresh choleraoutbreak in the area.

According to Karungu Deputy County Commissioner James Mabeya, several people have been admitted to different health facilities with cholera symptoms.

Mabeya attributed the perpetual cholera outbreak in the County to poor sanitation and lack of proper human waste disposal mechanisms in the area.

The Deputy County Commissioner now says his office, in collaboration with the department of health, are working on modalities to ensure that people living in the region have latrines and observe sanitation.

The Director of Health in the County Dr. Joel Gondi said the department has already dispatched health offices in the region to help control the outbreak.

Gondi affirmed that the county has enough health officers to help control the disease before it goes viral.

Gondi is now appealing to residents to ensure they observe proper hygiene in a bid to curb the outbreak permanently.

Migori residents, however, want the department of health to take necessary steps and address the problem once and for all.

This comes just a week after Siaya County’s health department recalled all health workers on leave following an increase in the number of cholera cases in the county.

The directive was issued by the acting county executive committee member for health Olum Gondi who cited staff shortage and the high rate at which the disease was spreading.

The director of health Dr. Omondi Owino also noted that the cholera situation in Siaya had worsened with a total of 95 cases being reported in a span of 5 months.

Residents have since been urged to observe proper hygiene and sanitation standards to avoid contracting the disease as well as curb it.
