100 hospitalised after consuming meat from dead cow in Nakuru

More than 100 residents of Kiptororo and Muthenji Villages in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, have been hospitalised with stomach complications following consumption of meat from a dead cow that succumbed to East Coast Fever (ECF) two days ago.

Speaking to Chamgei FM, Sirikwa Location Chief Elijah Cheruiyot said that the villages defied advice from the cow owner not to consume the meat.

This was after the veterinary officer who had treated the animal warned against any human consumption in case the cow died.

Cheruiyot said the locals shared the “free” chunk of meat as others went to an extent of selling the parts of the carcass to innocent villagers in other parts of the location.

Some of the victims who spoke to Citizen Digital said more than 90 people had already been taken to Molo sub-county hospital using the Sirikwa Secondary School Bus while more than 50 awaited to be ferried from Sirikwa Centre.

“My husband was taken ill in Kericho while some of our children who took the meat are writhing in pain here… we are waiting to take them to Molo,” said Nancy Rotich, one of the residents.

Another local, Teresia Wanjiru, said some of her children were complaining of diarrhea and headache while she was experiencing dizziness.
