100 people displaced as floods sweep through Isiolo

Over 100 people in Ngaremara, Isiolo County have been displaced from their homes following flash floods that hit the area Wednesday evening.

Isiolo County Red Cross Manager Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, Thursday morning said over 1,000 people in Isiolo County alone have been affected with Merti, Modogashe, Oldonyiro and Ngaremara areas being the most affected.

Speaking at Ngaremara where over 100 families have been rendered homeless by floods, Gitonga called on Isiolo County Government to set aside funds to help those affected.

He noted that those who have fled the areas are seeking refuge in the neighbouring areas.

Ngaremara Ward Administrator Ms. Josephine Eregai appealed to well wishers for help and urged the county government to help in redirecting the water fluxion which comes from Meru County.

Francis Faen, a resident whose house was submerged in the floods, asked the county and national governments to come to their rescue saying the funds set aside to help people affected by floods during the ongoing El Nino rains should be released to help them.

A bridge on the Meru – Isiolo road at Kwakoome was swept away by the floods and Public Service Vehicles are now charging high fares.

George Kiambi, a resident at Kwakoom urged the government to divert the flood water to proper channels and build culverts to avoid damage of the road.

This comes barely a week after a tea plantation was destroyed as floods at the Mathariti village in Kahuro Sub-County, Murang’a County.
