10,000 more students to join universities

The number of students being absorbed into local universities and colleges from high school has risen by more than 10,000 from the 57,000 candidates admitted last year.

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) CEO John Muraguri has, however, noted that ratio of girls to boys being admitted to universities and colleges remains at 41 to 59 percent respectively.

Speaking during the release of this year’s shortlist of candidates, Muraguri called for better funding of the institutions of higher learning in order to offer better services.

The placement boss has further intimated cluster points will be reviewed to ensure many students are not left out for failing to attain the required cluster of subjects.

Statistics from KUCCPS show 67,124 students qualified for admissions after obtaining the cut-off points of B (plain) of 60 points and B- (minus) of 58 points for male and female students respectively.

An additional 41,550 students will join the 50 middle-level colleges including Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), up from 36,995 students admitted last year.
