10,000 People In Kibish, Turkana Without IDs

The most affected areas are Lokamarinyang, Napak, Kaimothia, Meyian and Lokwamosing.

Kibish sub-county is the most remote sub county in Turkana County and it is situated in Elemi Triangle  where majority of people are illiterate and hence do not see the significance of having ID cards

Grace Eregae, a 56 year old mother of seven admits that she as well as her entire family do not possess the crucial documents.

She is asking the government to come and issue them with ID cards.

Assistant chief Philip Lobolia of Meyian sub location says that more than three quarters of his adult population do not have the document.

The chief is now accusing registration of persons officers in Turkana North of contributing to the mess.

He added that the registrars mix up the names and photos of ID holders thus making the ID cards produced invalid.

According to Kibish sub county commissioner Erick Wanyonyi, majority of the people in his sub county lack ID cards because of the distance from Lodwar to Kibish which is more than 400kms away.

The area has bad terrain in between and makes it difficult for the registration officers to move freely to the area.

Insecurity from neighboring Dongiro and Merrile from Ethiopia is also said to have made the situation worse.

The government however says it is trying to do all that is possible to carry out massive registrations of persons in that region to ensure that everyone gets the identification document.
