11 hospitalised in Bomet after suspected Anthrax outbreak

Eleven people in Emitiot Village in Sotik, Bomet County were rushed to Kapkatet and Longisa Hospitals after coming into contact with the carcass of a cow suspected to have anthrax.

Emitiot Sub-location Assistant Chief Peter Sawe said three of the victims were admitted at Kapkatet Hospital on Saturday while eight were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital on Sunday morning.

The carcass, which was poorly disposed in an open pit, is suspected to have been devoured by dogs which then spread the remains at different locations.

County veterinary officers in collaboration with with the public health department are in the village to persuade those with similar signs to seek treatment.

“The dogs have spread carcasses all over the village, we want to move house to house to help people know about this, already some have pimple like wounds which is a sign of the infections,” said Chief Sawe.

County Director of Veterinary Services Wilson Serem said the samples  of the meat have been taken for further examination.
