115 Mwiki buses impounded over students death

The National Transport and Safety Board (NTSA) has impounded 115 buses belonging to Mwiki Sacco Limited following an accident that led to the death of university student last Friday.

According to NTSA Deputy Director and Head of Licencing John Muya, the buses are currently at the vehicle inspection unit with the licence of the driver who knocked down the victim having been revoked.

The driver, Patrick Irungu and the driver of another vehicle that was also involved in the accident were arraigned in court Tuesday morning but were released on bail.

Muya warned other Saccos and companies against recklessness on the roads saying they should take precautionary measure to prevent such accidents from occurring.

He confirmed that the vehicles will be grounded for as long as it takes to inspect them.

Mwiki Sacco Ltd chair Simon Karangu conveyed his condolences to the family of the girl, Cecilia Njeri, saying he supported the action by NTSA to ground the vehicles.

He confirmed that the driver has been relieved off his duties noting that they are doing everything possible to ensure the drivers are cautious on the roads.

Some of the drivers, however, opposed NTSA’s decision saying both the drivers and passengers are hurting from the suspension.

They further challenged pedestrians to observed traffic rules when crossing the roads to prevent accidents.

It is reported that the mini-bus crushed the university student to death on Friday night outside Tuskys Beba Beba, along Tom Mboya Street in Nairobi.

The student is said to have been sandwiched between and the Mwiki bus and another vehicle whose driver fled the scene before he was later arrested.

Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
