At least 12 people died and 12 others were injured on Saturday night after a passenger bus rammed into a trailer near Gilgil on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The bus belonging to Climax Sacco was heading to Nairobi from Western Kenya while the trailer was heading to Nakuru from Naivasha.

Reports indicate that the bus driver was trying to overtake another vehicle when he hit the truck at around 2am.

The truck driver tried to swerve off the road to avoid a head-on collision but the bus, which was moving down a slope, rammed into the side of the truck.

Rifty Valley Traffic Commandant Zero Arome confirmed the 2am accident, saying the injured were rushed to the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.

The road has since been cleared and normal traffic restored.
