12m fake KEBS stamps, illicit brew nabbed in Nakuru residence

Over 12 million fake Kenya Bureau of Standards stamps and second-generation brews worth millions of shillings were on Sunday destroyed at a residence in Scode area of Bahati, Nakuru County.

The operation, which was led by Nacada Chairman John Mututho in the company of Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik and Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri, also led to the arrest of one person in connection to the consignment.

Mututho said that the ongoing operation against illicit brews and second-generation liquor has been successful.

Speaking to the press, Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik said that they suspect the liquor was transported from Nakuru Town after the owner was informed about the impending operation.

This comes in the wake of President Kenyatta’s order that all second-generation brews be banned.

Mututho denied claims that he had given a clean bill of health to a firm that manufactured a lethal brew, which led to death of several people in Gatundu.

At the same time, Mututho said that there was need to have a special enforcement unit under Nacada to carry out such operations.

On his part, Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri hit out at the County Government of Nakuru for issuing food and hygiene licenses to distillery firms without carrying out thorough inspection.

The legislator assured residents that he would not relent in the fight against illicit brews.

Similar operations were carried out in Rongai, Njoro and Subukia areas in the county.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested after he was found with petrol attempting to set ablaze a wines and spirits shop at Mchanganyiko area in Nakuru county.
