13 applicants want Issack Hassans job as IEBC boss

The position for the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has attracted 13 applicants while 800 others have applied for the posts of commissioners.

According to IEBC Selection Panel Chairman, Bernadette Musundi, the shortlisting of the applicants’ will now take longer than expected due to the high number of applicants.

The timelines presented earlier by the selection panel had the shortlisting of the applicants set to begin on November 15, 2016, while interviews for the shortlisted candidates were to start between November 22 and 26, 2016.

Last month, the IEBC selection panel announced vacancies in the posts of chairperson and members of the commission.

According to the panel, qualifications for the member of the commission position include sufficient knowledge in governance, electoral matters, finance and law; besides holding a degree from a recognized university.

The chairperson and members of the electoral body will serve for a single term of six years.

The Bernadette Musundi led panel has the responsibility of recruiting the next IEBC chair as well as six commissioners.

The panel will then forward the names to the President for nomination of one person for appointment as the chairperson and six others for appointment as Commissioners of the electoral body.
