Government clears 13 hawalas of terrorism links

The government has cleared 13 money remittance firms, popularly known as Hawalas, of any terrorism links.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary Major (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery has said that the government is narrowing on the Al Shabaab financiers with investigations into the 85 suspected individuals and organizations whose accounts were frozen going on.

Nkaissery said 13 Hawalas have so far been found to have no terror links.

“I want to put the record straight, any record given to us by anyone, we will not make it public, it is the responsibility of the government to investigate fully and so we have received so many leads,” said Nkaiserry.

The government also claims to have made strides in the war against terror, with the return of recruits following the amnesty call issued after the Garissa University College attack in April.

“I want to thank the young men who have heeded my amnesty and now they are undergoing rehabilitation by the security organs.”

He added; “Roughly more than 200 youth have returned. I want to send a very strong message that nobody should intimidate or threaten these young men who have volunteered to return home and support their motherland.”
