13 people die while siphoning fuel after petrol tanker overturns, explodes on Kisumu-Busia highway
Thirteen people died while siphoning fuel after a petrol tanker overturned and exploded in Malanga on the Kisumu-Busia highway.
Several other people were injured after fire broke out from the tanker that got involved in an accident near Argwings Kodhek Secondary School on Saturday night.
According to area residents, the tanker that was heading to Busia from Kisumu hit an oncoming lorry before it lost control and veered off the road then rolled.
A few members of the public then rushed to the scene and started siphoning fuel before the tanker exploded a few minutes later claiming several lives.
The lorry that was transporting milk was towed to the nearby Malanga Police Post after the accident.
Siaya County government fire fighters were called to the scene and managed to put out the fire after about an hour.
Malanga sub-location Assistant Chief Millicent Auma Otieno confirmed the incident noting that those who sustained injuries were rushed to the Yala sub-county hospital and later referred to Siaya County Referral Hospital.
