14 stations to vote Monday after clerks destroy ballot boxes, papers

At least 14 polling stations will on Monday repeat the voting process after polling clerks destroyed ballot boxes and papers after the National Electoral Commission (NEC) failed to give them a 100% increase in wages.

The clerks demanded that the electoral commission pays them Tsh 100,000 (Ksh 5,000) instead of the agreed Tsh 50,000 (Ksh 2,500).

According to NEC Director of Legal Services Emmanuel Kawishe, the clerks expressed their anger by tearing apart ballot papers and breaking ballot boxes forcing the voters to watch helplessly.

NEC was forced to reprint the voter registers and ballot papers as he ones set for use in the polling stations were destroyed beyond measure.
Police were forced to intervene with the clerks and electorate scampering to safety. Several people suffered minor injuries during the incident.
NEC now says that the clerks will be dealt with in accordance with the law while the elections in the 14 polling stations will be repeated Monday starting 7AM to 4PM.
The affected polling stations are located in Kimara area of Tanzania.
This comes despite cases of voter bribery and alleged planned rigging already being reported in some areas. However, the electoral commission has dismissed the claims as unfounded and in bad taste.
