15 Moi University watchmen arrested after rape of First year student

Fifteen guards have been arrested in connection with the rape of a student at the Moi University, main campus, in Eldoret.

The incident took place on Friday, October 6 night but was reported on Sunday, October 8 morning. The guard is accused of taking advantage of the first year student, who had allegedly been caught with a male colleague at around 2 am against the institution’s rules.

Reports of the rape incident sparked outrage at the Eldoret-based institution, with students staging demos demanding justice for their comrade.

“Security personnel stormed into her room, and here we have the ten to ten rules where it is unlawful to be in a female hostel when you’re a male within this time. So when the soldier went there, he forced her to succumb to his desire,” narrated Moi University Students Organization (MUSO) Secretary General, Remy Mwalo.

The students are now calling upon the university administration in conjunction with the national government to lay out infrastructures that will ensure the safety of students not just in hostels but also within the institution.

“We woke up to news of a lady being raped, we need a serious government that needs to act, and we are calling upon all government machinery to appear and sort out security within the campus,” said MUSO President, Towett Ng’etich.

Although 15 guards were first arrested in connection with the incident, Langas OCPD, Wako Abduba, told the Citizen Digital that 14 have been released so far after preliminary investigations failed to link them to the case. The one still in custody, who is believed to be the real perpetrator, will be arraigned in court today (Monday, October 9).

The University administration has also confirmed the incident, saying police are conducting further investigations.

In a circular to students, the Dean of Students, Dr J.S Ayieko, has asked anyone with information on that and any other related incident to come forward with information, insisting that the institution is committed to ensuring justice for victims.
