15 suspected muggers arrested in Thika

Police have arrested 15 people accused of involvement in snatching of women handbags in Makongeni area in Thika.

Thika West OCPD Willy Simba said the touts were arrested over the weekend at Makongeni National Oil stage after a tip off by members of the public following public outcry over increased muggings in the area.

The arrest came just a few days after security heads in the area held a meeting with various stakeholders including matatu, boda boda and tuk tuk operators.

During the security committee meeting, new operational rules were issued to the operators in a bid to curb increased crime in the area.

The OCPD appealed to the residents to alert the police in case they spot a motorcycle being operated without number plates, noting that they are mostly used by criminals for getaway purposes.

He further said security agencies would enhance patrols around matatu terminus which he said have been turned into hideouts for criminal gangs.

Security apparatus have been on high alert to curb the rising crime incidents in major cities. In Nairobi, an anti-mugging squad drawn from various police units was established to deal with the marauding thugs who strike even in broad daylight, targeting any valuable possession including earrings, necklaces and wigs.
