16 Killed Despite Truce Efforts In Gaza

“The strike wounded more than 200, most of them women and children,” said John Ging, U.N.’s Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs director.

It is still unclear who was behind the attack but Israeli military said it could have been a rocket fired from Gaza that fell short of Israel and exploded.

The number of people present in the shelter during the explosions is still unclear, but such U.N. schools can typically hold up to 1,500 people.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who met with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in Cairo to employ shuttle diplomacy to forge a truce between Gaza and Israel, said it was a great disappointment.

“I am telling to the parties, Israelis and Hamas that it is morally wrong to kill your own people. The whole world has been watching, is watching with great concern. You must stop fighting and enter into dialogue,” said Ban-Ki-moon.

Meanwhile, officials confirmed that at least two Palestinians were yesterday killed in the West Bank during protests against Israel's military campaign in Gaza.

More than 10,000 protesters marched from Ramallah towards East Jerusalem, where they were met by Israeli forces and dispersed after throwing rocks, firebombs and fireworks.

Around 200 protesters were wounded in the commotion

Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Dr. Ashraf al-Qidra confirmed that on Thursday alone, 107 people were killed.

The Palestinian government has also condemned the incident, terming it “Israeli brutal aggression that targeted” Gaza's displaced.

They have now demanded an end to the fight

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his side also said he regretted each Palestinian civilian death, but said they were "the responsibility of Hamas".

The death toll in Gaza fights has continued to rise, with over 800 Palestinians and 33 Israelis killed the fight started in 8 July.
