18 people killed in Yemeni airstrikes

Saudi-led coalition air strikes hit a large warehouse storing electrical equipment and a nearby sewing factory in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Saturday night.

The raid killed 18 people, residents and the Houthi-controlled state news agency Saba said.

The coalition launched a military campaign in March to stop the Houthis from taking complete control of Yemen after they seized the capital Sanaa and advanced south towards the port city of Aden.

The Houthis are allies of Iran, the main regional rival of Saudi Arabia.

The conflict has killed around 6,000 people, almost half of them civilians.

“Air strikes hit a warehouse with some 18 workers who had nothing to do with anything, workers only. So far we have pulled one body only and he is just 13 years old. There is another body under the rubble,” said local resident Ali al Amadi.

Reuters could not independently verify the death toll nor the identity of the 18 people killed.

The air strikes came just two days after Saudi Arabia warned the United Nations and international aid groups to protect staff by removing them from areas near rebel military bases, according to a letter that was seen by Reuters.

U.N. sanctions monitors said in a report last month that the Saudi-led coalition has targeted civilians with air strikes and some of the attacks could be crimes against humanity.
