U.S. immigration report reveals 182 Kenyans with arrest records requested for DACA

182 Kenyans living U.S. citizens who requested Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) had been previously been arrested for a criminal or immigration-related offense, a report has revealed.

Under the DACA system, undocumented migrants who arrived in the US as children are given temporary, protection.

It was created in 2012 by President Barack Obama to allow children who taken to the U.S. illegally to be able to live, study and work.

The November 2019 report from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) said there were a total of 888,818 aliens from different countries who applied for DACA.

It lists the number of approved and denied/terminated DACA requestors with arrest records.

Aside from Kenya, other African countries in the report include Nigeria (209), Ghana (65), Liberia (55), Egypt (53), Zimbabwe (43), Zambia (42), South Africa (40), Gambia (37), Sierra Leone (35), Senegal (33), Cote d’Ivoire (27), Cameroon (26) and Mali (21).

“An arrest indicates the alien was arrested or apprehended only and does not mean the alien was convicted of a crime. Further, aliens may not have been charged with a crime resulting from the arrest, may have had their charges reduced or dismissed entirely, or may have been acquitted of any charges,” the report reads.

The report titled DACA Requestors with an IDENT Response also listed the number of approved and denied/terminated DACA requestors.

Out of all the 888,818 requestors, 79,398 were approved despite having arrest records.

30,132 with previous arrest records had their DAZA request denied or terminated.

The report covered 78 countries globally, with Mexico recording the highest number of DACA requestors with arrest records (91,272).

A total of 118,371 aliens who requested DACA were reported to have had arrest records.

An earlier version of this report had erroneously indicated that 182 Kenyans were arrested while applying for DACA
