185 bags of contraband sugar confiscated in Kisii
Police in Kisii impounded 185 bags of contraband sugar from a local supermarket in Kisii County on Monday evening.
Area OCPD Francis Nguli led a team of officers to Discount Supermarket where they found the 50kg bags labelled Transmara brown sugar.
Addressing the Press after the raid, Nguli warned that no business will be spared in the ongoing crackdown.
“The commodity will undergo analysis with the help of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and government chemists who will ascertain its content before action is taken accordingly,” he said.
Mr. Patel Bhagat, the owner of the supermarket said he was an innocent businessman who had bought the consignment through legal procedures.
“The product was purchased from Transmara Sugar Industries and Sukari Industries denied repackaging it,” he said.
Questions have arisen as to how contraband products found their way into the country despite various border checks.
